The one day mini clinic is an informal, hands-on introduction to foundation training. It was designed to teach attendees to communicate with their horses in a way that the horse can understand — building trust, and enhancing the handler/rider’s ability to control the horse both on the ground and in the saddle. This clinic is ideal for horses and/or riders at a beginner or intermediate level.

Groundwork
The morning session will focus on safely solving problems from the ground.
Some of the issues addressed include:

  • Leading — not letting the horse drag you away, bump into you, or run you over.
  • Controlling the horse’s feet — getting them to follow a feel and go where you want them to, at the speed you want them to.
  • Trailer loading
  • Spooking and shying
  • Standing for the ferrier

Horsemanship
The afternoon session will focus on working under saddle, giving participants a variety of exercises they can use to communicate with their horse in a soft and efficient manner. Some of the issues addressed include:

  • Standing still to be mounted
  • Controlling the horses speed with your seat
  • Walking and trotting on a loose rein
  • Backing up softly
  • Controlling the front and back ends of the horse independently

While it is possible to sign up for just one session of this clinic, it is recommended that attendees participate in both sessions of this clinic — unless their horse has not yet been started under saddle.
